Due to incredible viewer demand, Prime will screen an encore of the documentary series A Shocking Reminder as a special two-hour feature next Tuesday, February 28th.

Made by Christchurch-based Paua Productions, produced by proud Cantabrian Veronica McCarthy and directed by Robin Shingleton, the harrowing documentary shows the courage and fortitude of Cantabrian’s, explores the science behind the Christchurch earthquakes and documents life in a seismically active zone sharing human experiences and endeavours from both the 7.1 and the 6.3 quakes.

Prime Channel Manager Kathy Wright says she has been overwhelmed by viewer response to A Shocking Reminder and is pleased to offer an feature-length encore screening.

“Like our previous New Zealand on Air funded programming, such as Craig Potton’s Rivers and last year’s Hunt For The Pink And White Terraces, the large audience for A Shocking Reminder shows how much New Zealand viewers enjoy local documentaries. We are very grateful to New Zealand on Air for their support and hope to continue working with them to bring viewers more quality documentaries telling New Zealand stories,” she said.

Ms Wright says local content plays a strong role in Prime’s factual programming line up which includes the fly-on-the-shearing-shed-wall series Shearing Gang; three-part Christchurch documentary series The Grand Plan following one couple’s plans to develop an historic building into a modern gastropub; and the fascinating auction room insider History Under The Hammer.

A Shocking Reminder, two-hour feature length encore, 8.30pm Tuesday February 28th, only on PRIME.

Prime Television is delighted to announce a long-term renewal with BBC Worldwide to ensure New Zealand viewers see original Top Gear episodes first free-to-air.

The BAFTA and Emmy award winning quirky British motoring lifestyle show, hosted by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May, has long been a favourite with Prime viewers. The agreement also includes first run episodes of international versions of Top Gear Australia and Top Gear US.

Channel manager Kathy Wright said demand for great British content is stronger than ever with series such as Doctor Who, Scott & Bailey, Downton Abbey, Monroe and the channel’s Weekend Murders slot, featuring Midsomer Murders, Lewis, Marple and more, proving incredibly popular.

“We are delighted to be able to complement our programme line up with quality British content from BBC Worldwide. Prime prides itself in having a diverse, eclectic schedule with a broad appeal and our renewal also includes a significant package of quintessential BBC British drama, factual content and natural history which adds a further dimension to our prime-time offerings, particularly for those who are looking for more intelligent viewing,” she said.

New BBC Worldwide content coming to Prime includes Case Sensitive: The Point of Rescue a psychological police thriller of identity, guilt and the dark side of motherhood based on the award-winning novel by Sophie Hannah, starring Olivia Williams (An Education, The Sixth Sense) and Darren Boyd (PA’s Green Wing); Silk, a fast-paced law drama starring Maxine Peake (Criminal Justice II, Little Dorrit) and Rupert Penry-Jones (Spooks, Whitechapel); Silent Witness, one of the BBC’s most successful and longest-running crime dramas; and Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer on the hunt for the perfect holiday, from the budget and bijou to the grand and glamorous in Vacation, Vacation, Vacation. The factual and natural history content includes Madagascar, the latest from long-time Prime favourite Sir David Attenborough.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide content of this quality and range,” said Robyn Campbell, BBC Worldwide’s Sales Manager, New Zealand. “With smart storytelling, entertaining factual and stunning natural history, this diverse array of titles is sure to make a big impact on New Zealand audiences.”

“We are simply thrilled to have secured these titles, with more to be announced in the coming months,” said Ms Wright.

Prime Television’s hot new Edwardian drama series Downton Abbey proved to be as popular with New Zealand viewers on launch as it did with its British fans, resulting in record ratings for the free-to-air channel.

Prime Channel Manager Kathy Wright said it appears the broad-appeal drama boasting romance, loyalty, deception and scandal, has quickly found a home in the hearts of Kiwi viewers with last night’s first episode firmly cementing Downton Abbey as the channel’s highest ever rating drama.

“There has been a lot of buzz around the series, culminating in a huge amount of activity on social networking sites over the past couple of weeks and we are delighted that the series has been received so well,” she said.

“Downton Abbey is indicative of Prime’s quality drama content and adds to our strong British portfolio which includes other viewer favourites such as Midsomer Murders and Doctor Who, along with entertaining factual content from industry stalwarts including Stephen Fry, Rick Stein and Sir David Attenborough,” said Ms Wright.

Viewers who missed the first episode of this highly-acclaimed seven-part series will be able to watch a special encore screening tomorrow night, Thursday May 12, at 9.35pm.

Upon its UK launch last year, Downton Abbey quickly became the most talked about drama series in years, achieving the highest audience of any series on UK television since 2007 (audience figures hitting 12.8 million*).

From the pen of Oscar®-winning writer Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park), Downton Abbey portrays the lives of the aristocratic Crawley family and the servants who work for them, with a stellar cast led by critically-acclaimed actress Dame Maggie Smith and actor Hugh Bonneville.

Downton Abbey. Tuesdays at 8.30pm only on Prime.

Returning tonight is one of the competition’s highest scoring female challengers Kim Papp. In her heat, fire officer Kim careered through the Gauntlet; crossed the Hit and Run bridge three times; surprised Destiny by beating her; and sped up the Wall leaving Nitro in her wake. After amassing so many points, she went into the Eliminator with a time advantage and built on her lead for a substantial win – how will she do this time around?

On the other hand, her challenger, Jacquie Watson from Sydney, wasn’t as competitive against the Gladiators. Amazon beat her easily on Duel; Olympia outran her on Vertigo; Viper wouldn’t let her pass on Pyramid; but she managed to dodge balls on Hit and Run. Despite her two-second disadvantage, Jacquie overtook her rival to win by two seconds in the Eliminator – how will she stand up against the Gladiators this time?

Joseph Mckay from Victoria became another notch on Thunder’s belt with an easy knockdown on Duel but managed to beat Scar to the finish ring on Vertigo. He couldn’t get past Kouta on Pyramid and ducked and weaved the demolition balls of Hit and Run – will he make the final cut this week?

His challenger, Lincoln Burns from Victoria, failed to score in the Gauntlet; couldn’t dodge the balls on Hit and Run; Thunder proved too much of an obstacle on Sumoball; and he out-climbed Hunter on the Wall. With an event start on the Eliminator, he bolted ahead for the win – will he be so lucky this time?

Who will go on to become the two overall winners of the series (one male and one female) sharing in $100,000 and two All Wheel Drive Subaru Foresters?
