Outspoken ex-Green MP Nandor Tanczos joins the team of TV3 bloggers to write weekly for 3news.co.nz on environmental and ecological issues.

Tanczos, a social ecologist and Rastafarian of Hungarian and African descent, has been a businessman and a beggar, a legislator and an outlaw, and is currently a community educator, freelance writer and orator and can now add blogger for TV3’s new environment section to his repertoire.

He says: “We have to move beyond talking about turning appliances off at the wall and being more efficient. We need to radically deepen the debate about how to build a civilisation that has ecological integrity. I want to thank TV3 for providing a platform to contribute to that debate.”

General Manager – MediaWorks Interactive, Siobhan McKenna says: “Nandor has a very interesting mind, the contents of which will now be shared with the 3news.co.nz audience weekly. This will be vital reading for anyone who needs to be “disturbed” into living a more satisfying life – from someone who actually practices what he preaches. I’m looking forward to reading him.”

She adds: “The environment is potentially the biggest story of our lifetimes. It could possibly be front page news every day – but doesn’t always get the coverage it deserves. We wanted to continue the interest in the environment built up during the Copenhagen Climate Change conference and cover the story in more depth rather than leave it to fade away.”

The environment section will also carry blogs from Chief Executive of WWF New Zealand Chris Howe and the UNICEF Climate Kiwis – five young New Zealanders committed to working on the issue of climate change.

Interested in witnessing the awesome force of destruction? Then TV3 has just what you need – Destroyed in Seconds, premiering its damaging first season on Monday, March 22nd at 7:30pm on 3.

In each episode of Destroyed in Seconds, 3 News Sports Reporter Andrew Gourdie will bring viewers clip after clip of the most shocking destructions ever captured on film.

From well-orchestrated implosions of massive structures, to rampaging tornadoes, catastrophic mid-air collisions and sudden terrorist attacks, no topic is too trivial or taboo for Destroyed in Seconds.

Be they acts of nature or caused by man, Gourdie says that Destroyed in Seconds’ stunning disasters are what first attracted him to the series.

“What attracted me to Destroyed in Seconds is the show’s amazing footage,” he explains.

“This is a completely different presenting role from what I’m used to for 3 News. I like the show because I know from my usual job in 3 News how hard it is to capture things on camera.”

But there’s more to Destroyed in Seconds than just incredible footage of destruction.

“The series will also explore the causes of these disasters and, when possible, show how families and communities bounce back from the devastation,” Gourdie continues.

Make sure not to miss a moment of this when Gourdie explores the cause and effect of catastrophes caught on tape in Destroyed in Seconds, premiering on Monday, March 22nd at 7:30pm on 3.

In the two weeks since Paul’s return, Breakfast has averaged 143,625* viewers every morning. This is a significant gain on the previous fortnight’s average that showed 119,008* people watching every morning. It is also well ahead of the same period last year when 127,242* were watching.

While TVNZ’s Breakfast programme continues to grow in popularity the same can’t be said of TV3’s early morning show. Official ratings data shows Sunrise has dropped almost 4,000* viewers on average every day since March 1st compared to the same period last year.

This year, Sunrise averaged just 21,770* viewers per morning compared to 25,717* in 2009.

* Ratings data source: AGB NMR (Measurement: All people 5 years and over – average daily audience nationwide)

Background:

- Paul Henry took an extended holiday to use up accrued leave- 18th December 2009 through 1st March 2010
- Breakfast was off-air over the Christmas period from 21st December – 17th January.

For the week 8-12 March, Campbell Live averaged a 20.9% audience share 18-49 compared with Close Up’s 17.6%

In Close Up’s target audience of 25-54 year olds, Campbell Live also won with a 21.1% share compared with Close Up’s 20.7%.

Speaking from Los Angeles, Aspen told Dan News how excited he is to be joining the Good Morning team.

“I love dishing up celebrity news with friendly folks and, as a morning person, I’m especially pleased to know my kiwi friends are starting their day with me”.

Nelson Aspen has been reporting celebrity news since the early 90’s. His first assignment was for a UK breakfast show where he covered “Fitness for Pets with Betty White” he recalls.

Now that he reports for Australian and New Zealand audiences, he doesn’t miss having to stay up all night to report for British television, and being on early in New Zealand means he can break stories that have developed overnight.

He takes his job seriously, pointing out that there is a difference between gossip and celebrity news.

“I don’t get off on the misery of others, as so many ‘gossips’ do. There are plenty of showbiz stories to report that are interesting and fun without having to crawl through the tabloid mud. Those kinds of pundits don’t generally have long careers. Karma catches up with them eventually.”

Aspen is yet to visit New Zealand, but said that he would love the opportunity. “I’ve never met a Kiwi I haven’t liked. And I’ve never met a NZ Sauvignon Blanc I haven’t liked, either!”

Nelson Aspen starts on Good Morning on March 17.
