A parody song based on hit song performed by pop icons Katy Perry and Snoop Dogg has taken off in its own right.

‘Porirua Gurls’, written and performed by X105 radio announcers Gary Pointon and Jono Manks (aka ‘Manksy’), highlights some the greatest things about Porirua City and its surrounding suburbs and is based on #1 hit song ‘California Gurls’.

Initially released via www.x105fm.com, the song has found its way on to websites such as Youtube where it is being watched by thousands every day. Due to an overwhelming amount of requests for the song, a music video has also been made and was released on the 9th of July.

Within a week of its release the video for the song has reached over 5000 views on Youtube alone.

Manksy and Gary are hosts on X105’s breakfast programme ‘Manksy In The Morning’ and found that the concept and lyrics came together quite easily, “We were just talking about how there are always these songs about California and New York but never places in New Zealand, Porirua seemed to fit quite nicely.” Says Pointon.

Manksy points out that while the song is called ‘Porirua Gurls’ there’s a bit more to it “We wanted to highlight what is positive about the area, it’s also a tongue In cheek ode to a place where many of our listeners live, so far it has been taken in the spirit intended.”

Flava in Auckland, will change frequency tonight The Radio Network announced. It will move from 96.1FM to 95.8FM.

“It is important for listeners to correctly retune their radios to ensure they can continue receive Flava loud and clear”, says Grant Lee TRN’s General Manager Auckland.

“We have a freephone listeners can call if they encounter any reception issues as a result of the changes – it’s 0508 CHANGE or 0508 242643”.

The radio industry in New Zealand has also launched a website for listeners to search out their local frequencies and also find what frequencies in their area are changing – www.frequencyfinder.co.nz

TRN has almost 50 changes to make out of a total of 254 frequency changes required throughout New Zealand before April 2011, when the new twenty year licence management rights commence.

The Ministry of Economic Development on behalf of the Crown has worked with broadcasters to clean up the entire FM band for New Zealand as part of the process of moving to the new rights.

“In theory all frequencies could change at midnight 2 April 2011. However, in practice there is insufficient technical resource to do this. All licence holders are being encouraged to move as soon as possible to avoid chaos in early 2011, that’s why TRN is making the changes in Auckland now”, says Peter Casey TRN’s frequency engineering project manager.

George FM’s breakfast show host, Nick D, is about to head off to exotic and far flung parts of the planet to film the second series of the music and travel show Making Tracks. While Nick is away making the award winning C4 show, George FM listeners will be looked after by some of his best TV mates.

First up will be Oliver Driver who will be taking on hosting duties for three weeks from Monday May 10.

From May 31 Clarke Gayford will take over the reigns for two weeks with Jaquie Brown joining him each Monday to create the kind of radio magic only she can.

George FM Programme Director Ande Macpherson is thrilled by the calibre of the talent who will be standing in for Nick.

He comments: “Oliver, Clarke and Jaquie are all at a loose end and it seemed only right that we should force them to get out of bed early like everyone else does. We will welcome them to our state of the art Ponsonby Road studios and most importantly I know the George FM listeners will be in for a treat”.

Making Tracks will screen later this year on C4.

3’s award winning show Target returns for a new season with more consumer information and its trademark hidden camera item. Target premieres Tuesday, January 26th at 7:30pm on 3.

Presented by Jeanette Thomas and Brooke Howard-Smith, Target provides useful consumer information in an entertaining and educational style.

“It’s the start of a new decade and the start of a new series of Target,” says producer Simon Roy.

Returning in the series’ 12th season are all the show’s favourite segments as well as Target’s trademark hidden camera item, exposing good and bad work practices.

“This segment shows viewers just what trades people get up to in your home when you’re not around,” explains Roy about the segment which in the past has landed more than one trades company in hot water.

“As well as this our Product Check returns with a new Product Check family testing a range of items.”

“And Brooke Howard Smith is back with Shame On You, naming and shaming shoddy businesses or practises and helping to solve problems that viewers have written in about.”

As well as these established segments, this year’s series also offers a brand new feature set to entertain and educate audiences. According to Roy, new to Target this season will be the “What’s Up With That” segment which will see Jeanette seeing answers to some of the many questions that puzzle consumers.

“She’ll be asking anything from whether Swedish rounding is legal, to why aren’t butchers allowed to give away Cheerio’s,” Roy explains.

Make sure not to miss this when Target returns to our screens on Tuesday, January 26th at 7:30pm on 3.
