I know what you’re thinking. Cruising is for the newlywed, overfed and nearly dead.
And, to some degree, you’re right. In fact, if you hop on a cruise ship I guarantee you will come across pretty much all of the above… but I promise by the end of your cruise, you won’t want to hop off.
So if you’re thinking of booking a cruise holiday, here’s my top tips for making your first cruise one of the best experiences of your life!
1. Don’t let seasickness ruin your holiday
If you’re prone to nausea, spend some time near the middle of the ship – this is usually the part of the ship where you are less likely to feel movement. There are seasickness remedies available to purchase on-board but keep in mind the prices are high. So, just in case, make sure you pack your Sea-Legs. My best option would be find a space on an open deck and just take in the fresh ocean breeze.
2. Don’t board the ship hungry
As tempting as it may be to head straight to the buffet, why not hold off and explore the ship while everyone else gets stuck in the dining room queues. Who knows, you might just stumble across a lesser-known, much less crowded dining option. And, if not, you can always hit up the buffet once the crowds have died down.
3. Before you do anything else, tour the ship.
Unless you’re traveling on a Royal Caribbean Oasis class ship, you have no excuse for saying the ship’s too big! So why not familiarise yourself with the different areas you’ll be spending most of your time on-board, including where the elevators are located, and spend less of your precious holiday time wandering around lost.
4. Looking to save money? Go for the cheap cabin.
Let’s face it, if you only use your cabin to shower and sleep, do you really need the most expensive one? Consider booking an inside stateroom instead. Trust me – you’ll pay much less, leaving you with more money to spend on the ship. Woohoo!
5. Watch the sun set over the ocean.
There’s no denying it’s one of the most beautiful sights in nature, and best of all – it doesn’t cost a thing! Grab a loved one’s hand (or, if you’re like me, your favorite cocktail), and take in the magical sight. Okay so you’ve seen it before, sure, but watching the sun set over the ocean never fails to give you that “OMG life is good” moment.
