“Two more please!” Air New Zealand order more dreamy 787’s

Air New Zealand has today announced plans to take delivery of two additional Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft.

The airline already has three of these revolutionary new aircraft in its fleet with a further seven on firm order.

These two additional aircraft are expected to be delivered in late 2017 and the latter half of 2018 respectively and will take the total number of Dreamliners in the fleet to 12. The airline has another six 787-9 purchase options still available.

Air New Zealand Chief Executive Officer Christopher Luxon announced the fleet investment at an event in Sydney today.

“This investment is possible as a result of our strong commercial results. As the airline’s commercial performance continues to improve, we are focussed on reinvesting our profits directly back into the business on products, services and fleet to further enhance the customer experience and to ensure the business remains strong and competitive.

“Air New Zealand is very committed to the Boeing 787-9. The aircraft is a key component in our growth strategy. These new aircraft will provide us with additional flexibility as we move forward with our growth plans,” says Mr Luxon.

Earlier this year Air New Zealand became the first airline in the world to take delivery of the Boeing 787-9. The airline first operated the aircraft to Sydney followed by scheduled services to Perth, Shanghai and most recently Tokyo.

“The entry into service programme has gone very smoothly and we’ve been incredibly pleased with the aircraft’s performance. Feedback from customers has also been very positive with many commenting on the cabin fit out, our new inflight product and entertainment system,” says Mr Luxon.

The aircraft is a game-changer for the airline with increased levels of fuel efficiency and passenger comfort through a raft of on board technologies.

New ZM Drive show hosts announced

NMZE. Radio has confirmed its new line-up for their ZM Drive show. Jase Hawkins will join rising star PJ (Polly Harding) who is currently ZM’s Day announcer. Chief Content Officer for NZME. Radio, Gemma Fordham says Hawkins and PJ are a natural fit.

“The most important aspect of any radio team is synergy. This cannot be manufactured and the chemistry these two have, from the moment they first met, is astounding and something I’ve only come across a few times in my career. We knew immediately we were on to something special.

“Hawkins has worked on various top rating radio shows in Australia including Sydney’s 2DayFM and Brisbane’s B105. However he’s had one ear on the New Zealand radio scene and was impressed by what he heard.

“I’m a big fan of Fletch, Vaughan and Megan’s show and have been a regular listener to their podcasts. I loved the changes that were made to ZM and reached out. I met PJ and it felt like I was on an awkward date with my sister. The chick is random as, which I love. When I was asked if I wanted to hang out with her every afternoon, travel around New Zealand and throw massive parties for ZM listeners I couldn’t say no.”

Fordham says Harding has been rising up the ranks at ZM for some time now.

“PJ has a very easy relaxed style and has no concerns having a laugh at herself, which will be a good trait given Jase’s love of pranks and having a laugh. PJ has been developed through the ZM family and we already know the audience loves her.”

Harding caught up with Hawkins in Brisbane while on holiday last month.

“When I met Jase I couldn’t believe how ridiculously good looking the man was, the sexual spark was hard to ignore and when I was offered a ridiculously low wage to be in his presence each afternoon I couldn’t say no. For the record this quote was not written by Jase. In all seriousness I’m so excited to be working with Jase and can’t wait to get started in January.”
Fordham believes the ZM line-up for 2015 is incredibly strong for the key 18-39 demographic.

“We’ve purposefully made ZM younger across the board and our internal research indicates it has been a strong move for us. Our digital stats are through the roof with www.zmonline.com dominating the market and clearly the number one radio website in the country.* ZM listeners listen and engage across all mediums and increasingly online via their phones, tablets and on iHeartRadio.”

PJ and Jase will begin on air 12th January 2015 replacing “Jay and Flynny” (Jay Reeve and Paul Flynn) who remain with NZME. Radio on Radio Hauraki and The Hits respectively.
For NZME. Radio it’s been an exciting year full of change, innovation and trail blazing.

Fordham says 2015 brings more of the shows the audience love. “In addition to this there are also some exciting new shows. Our breakfast shows will now run until 10am on all music brands except for The Hits. We’re stoked with the array of talent we have here at NZME. Radio. Bring on 2015. We’re ready to kick ass!”

Details of new MediaWorks integrated newsroom

MediaWorks Limited (MWL) today announced its new organisational structure, setting the foundation for growing a thriving, integrated media business.

MWL, which owns and operates TV3 and FOUR, has more than half the commercial radio market including The Edge, The Rock, More, George, Mai, The Breeze, and RadioLIVE, and a strong portfolio of websites, mobile and tablet apps, announced major strategic changes in the News and Digital areas.

Group CEO, Mark Weldon says: “Having already created Group Content, Revenue, and Product and IT roles, I am pleased to announce MWL is moving to a single, converged Newsroom, and will also integrate our historically standalone Digital operations into the business.

“This is a major strategic reorganisation that puts MediaWorks in an excellent position for future growth, with an Executive team characterised by their fresh thinking and technology, content and customer savvy.”

MediaWorks will create a new, fully integrated newsroom.

MWL’s TV, Radio and Digital news operations will be combined into a unified news team under the leadership of Mark Jennings, who has been promoted to a new role, Group Head of News. Current staff members working in TV, Radio and Digital news roles will become part of a new integrated News team, comprising more than 200 people.

Group Head of News, Mark Jennings says: “I feel privileged to be leading our combined news operation at this important time in our history. The news environment is changing rapidly, yet we are uniquely equipped to meet the challenges.

“By bringing together our television, radio and digital assets, we will create the best news service in the country and drive home our competitive advantage. The cross-platform breakfast show hosted by Paul Henry is the spearhead of this new approach and I am very keen to work with Mark and the Group Executive to create the newsroom of the future.

Group CEO Mark Weldon says: “News is core to our business and merging our news operations and combining our strength across radio, TV and digital gives us the opportunity to build New Zealand’s leading news service.”

MediaWorks’ Interactive division will be merged into the wider business.

Consistent with an integrated, brand-led strategy, Digital will sit at the centre of MediaWorks, rather than in a separate business unit.

Group CEO, Mark Weldon says: “Merging our Interactive division into the wider business places our digital strategy at the heart of every part of MWL, and is key to creating an organisation that better serves advertisers and audiences.”

Digital news staff will become part of the integrated News group; the Digital Sales team will become part of Group Head of Revenue, Liz Fraser’s team; and the technology members of Interactive will move to the IT and Productisation area headed by Tom Cotter.

These changes follow three recent appointments to new Group Executive roles.

Liz Fraser was recently promoted to Group Head of Revenue, responsible for MediaWorks sales and integration teams across TV, Radio and Digital.

Andrew Szusterman was named Group Entertainment Content Director, with oversight of the content strategy of MediaWorks across all platforms – linear TV, linear radio, VOD, online, mobile, tablet and emerging platforms.

Tom Cotter joined the company as Chief Information and Product Officer, responsible for delivery and design of all IT and IT-related products across the Group.

Other executive changes

As a result of this reorganisation, and after discussion over other roles, both CEO Television, Paul Maher and CEO Interactive, Siobhan McKenna are leaving MediaWorks.

Mark Weldon says: “On behalf of the Board and all staff, I want to thank Paul and Siobhan for their contributions to MediaWorks.

“Paul built a strong team across TV News, Programming and Sales, that have, under his leadership, been responsible for a significant turnaround in the profitability of the TV unit at MediaWorks. That two of this team – Liz Fraser and Mark Jennings – are now Group Executives is testament to the value he has added to the business.

“Siobhan has successfully grown a digital start-up into a mature set of revenue lines, and developed a team who make a significant contribution to every part of the business. She is to be applauded for this success and for the drive and determination of her leadership.”

Fire at TVNZ’s Auckland Building

There was a fire at TVNZ’s Auckland building on the corner of Victoria Street West and Hobson Street just before 10am this morning.

All TVNZ staff and contractors are safe and there are no injuries reported. People who were working in the building at the time of the fire were all safely evacuated.

The fire is out and TVNZ remains on air. The ONE News team is operational.

TVNZ is currently assessing the cause and the extent of damage, which is understood to be relatively minor. TVNZ staff are now back in the building.

The fire is unrelated to any building activity.

Changes at ZM: Jay and Flynny announce departure

Jay and Flynny have just announced their departure from their afternoon ZM slot.

Here’s a statement from their Facebook:

Hey guys – we are stoked that we can finally let you know the secret that we have been dying to tell you for the last year or so
We’ve worked together for almost six years – and we have had the best times. We’ve travelled to the States, Thailand, and all around New Zealand many, many times. The thing that makes this show so awesome is you guys who listen and have called us, texted us, joined in our ridiculous banter, partied way too hard with us at the Jay & Flynny Couple of Quiets, the 7s, Mardi Gras… We want to thank YOU from the bottom of our hearts for being part of our life every day!
We have been offered amazing opportunities that we couldn’t refuse! I, Flynny, will be moving to The Hits to be on air with Stacey Morrison at 3pm each day, and Jay will be joining the Radio Hauraki team, on air from 5am weekdays.
We are best mates on the show but also best mates off it and that’s not gonna change – we both love a beer and a yarn and we’ll always be there for each other. Our last show is Friday the 19th and it’s going to be everything that we think our show is – a party in a bar with heaps of good people like you guys! We will have more details on how you can party with us one last time tomorrow.
Thanks so much again,
Jay & Flynny
