Broadcasting School students launch news website

Students at the New Zealand Broadcasting School have launched a new multimedia news website.

Storyboard.co.nz is a dedicated news and current affairs website, showcasing all content produced by the second-year journalism students at NZBS.

Journalism student, Jacob Brown says it is the first time NZBS has had a dedicated news site encompassing all areas of journalism.

“The inclusion of radio news and uploading of ‘podcasts’ and individual audio stories, along with individual video stories (and soon entire Metro News bulletins) is something unique to the school and we feel it will prepare our students and ourselves for the ever changing media landscape we are about to delve into.”

“What we are trying to create is a news hub to cover ‘everything Canterbury’.  This includes news and sport, but also regular blogs from our students and feature-length television and radio items.”

Second year journalism students are responsible for everything in the journalistic process. From identifying story ideas to researching, filming to scripting and editing.  This is all carried out by the second year journos, aided by NZBS tutors.  So all stories on the website have been started fresh and then completed to the finished product you see online.

Brown said the Christchurch earthquakes have played a big part in the stories being covered.

“It has affected our whole news-gathering process. Almost every story we do is somehow related to the earthquake, and a lot of our stories are solely on earthquake progress and updates. We’re surrounded by it, and as a news site dedicated to Canterbury news, it’s something we have to take on board.”
