Nightline dominates late night news ratings

November has seen Nightline pull away from its competitor TV ONE’s Tonight in all key demographics.

In the all important 18-49 – TV3’s target demographic – Nightline dominates with a 27.3% share compared with Tonight’s 15.6%, showing growth year-on-year of 28.5% –compared with Tonight’s decline of 14.5%.

November year-on-year figures also show that, along with the 18-49 demographic, Nightline increased its share in 5+, 18-49 Metro, 18-49 Auckland Urban and also beat Tonight in its own target demographic of 25-54 with a 26.9% share – compared with their share of 19.4%, down 14.6% year-on-year.

Director of News and Current Affairs, Mark Jennings said the figures showed that Nightline was now the dominant news programme in the late evening slot.

“It’s now nearly 20 years since Nightline first burst on to our screens and brought a fresh perspective to late evening news. Today it leads the way in providing the mix of news that viewers want at this time of night.

Summer always brings a rise in the ratings for the late evening news programmes so it is very pleasing for the Network to have Nightline sitting in such a strong position.

Along with Nightline, 3 News continues to hold the lead with a 30.6% share in the key 18-49 demographic, against ONE News at 29.7%.

Sunrise was also up year-on-year showing a 4.4% rise in the key 18-49 demographic, and substantial growth in 18-49 Waikato with a share of 9.9%, up 76.1% year-on-year.
