TVNZ attempts first ever live cross from Milford Sound

Home Broadcasting and Media TVNZ attempts first ever live cross from Milford Sound

It’s 40 years ago this year since the first network news broadcast in NZ yet it appears that at no time in our transmission history has there been a live broadcast from Milford Sound.

Next week TVNZ Weather presenter, Jim Hickey is going to attempt to change that by broadcasting live from the fjord on Wednesday night.

“We don’t believe it’s ever been done before and the reason why is because until recently the terrain, climate and isolation have made it technically impossible but we now have sophisticated satellite broadcast and communications equipment that can get us over those obstacles”, says ONE News Editor, Paul Patrick.

“Really the only thing that could prevent this television first is the weather itself – the high avalanche risk and low cloud around Milford at the moment may prevent Jim from getting in there and broadcasting out but Jim says the forecast is looking good for mid-week so we’re hopeful it will all come together so we can bring Mitre Peak live to NZ for the first time ever”.

TVNZ’s weather presenters Jim Hickey and Tamati Coffey are doing a weather tour of Fiordland and Central Otago this coming week. TVNZ welcomes locals from Alexandra, Te Anau, Milford and Queenstown to come down to the satellite broadcast point while Jim and Tamati are there to meet them.
