New look Herald website
The New Zealand Herald launched its new look website yesterday afternoon and reaction has been mixed. Emails to dannews.co.nz have described the new look as “cluttered” and “change for the sake of change.”
What do you think about it?

Not a new website, just a new homepage. I personally like it – I think it is much better than what it was.
It is much cleaner and less text heavy than it was. They are also not selling advertising for the sake of making money. The super rec (Farmers) that is on the homepage is big, this is true. However, if that placement has not been purchased as a super rec and just a normal sized rectangle, the top banner returns. They had the option not to remove the top banner when the super rec was live, but they chose to not blast their users with advertising, and I say good on them.
I’d love someone to grab a screen shot of the homepage before yesterday afternoon and do a side by side comparison. I think a lot of people would be surprised.
Definitely too cluttered. Obviously designed by an uber web geek, rather than someone who actually studies how people browse news websites.
Sounds like iChild is attached to the project. I felt their last homepage was bad (when it loaded and didnt give me a ‘save’ error) but this isnt much better. It doesnt flow from left to right, which is the way people READ WEBSITES. Fail. Sorry, but fail.
They doing what both their paper and Sunday Star times did… its a first look technique. You load that page and without moving the mouse you see many articles that should catch your mind…. you will notice this with the papers now… it is specifically designed so that all headlines and information are up the top half of the page as this is the only side you see when it is folded in a stand.
Although it is messy…
I like it. To me it only seems like a small revamp, which it needed after Stuff.co.nz changed a few months ago. It is all much better laid out than it used to be.
People take a while to get used to change!
