Listen up! Radio survey results are out
The results for the first radio survey period of the year are out and provide interesting reading. With the survey conducted in the five major metro areas, Newstalk ZB maintains its position as most listened to station, amassing 439, 100 listeners per week, with The Edge in second place around 30,000 listeners behind. The biggest drop in listeners nationwide was Classic Hits losing 35,100 listeners, meanwhile Mai FM, now under the Mediaworks Radio umbrella was the biggest winner, gaining just under 10,000 listeners per week.
As with the number of listeners, Newstalk ZB holds the top of the table ranks in market share, maintaining a 1.5% lead over their closest rivals, The Rock.
In Auckland, Newstalk ZB continues to have the most listeners each week, with 210,000 different people tuning in each week. Mai FM moves up to second place with 149,800 different pairs of ears followed by ZM in third.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Auckland is still Newstalk ZB with a 13.0% share of the market. Newstalk ZB Breakfast continues to hold the highest share, despite a change of host for the first time in 22 years, with 18.0% of the commercial radio breakfast market. ZM remains in second position, gaining an 8.7% share.
Waikato loves The Rock.
The station holds top share with a 15.7% share. Newstalk ZB gains second place with a 12.3% share of commercial radio listening, followed by Classic Hits. Breakfast results (Mon-Fri 6am-9am) show The Rock still has the highest share, with 15.6% of the commercial radio breakfast market in Waikato. Newstalk ZB’s Mike Hosking Breakfast holds onto second place with a 14.6% share.
It was ZM, then daylight in Wellington, with 63,100 different people tuning in each week. The hit music station also takes the highest market share in Wellington with a 16.0% share of the market. Breakfast results (Mon-Fri 6am-9am) show ZM takes the highest share, with 19.6% of the commercial radio breakfast market.
A mixed bag in Christchurch, More FM still takes the most listeners each week, with 73,900 different people listening.. The Edge follows in second with 69,800 different listeners each week and The Rock claims third place with 64,700 listeners each week.
The commercial radio station with the highest market share in Christchurch is still The Rock with a 15.2% share of the market, followed by Newstalk ZB holding second position with a 13.3% share
Breakfast ratings show Simon Barnett and Gary McCormick on More FM moving up to take the number one position off Newstalk ZB, with 17.4% of the market. ZB takes second spot (who switched to the national breakfast for the first time at the start of 2009, following the axing of a local breakfast) with a 16.1% share. Meanwhile, Jason Gunn’s second excursion in radio hasn’t been an instant success with his breakfast show with co-host Tim Dyer dropping from the previous ratings with previous host Dave Fitzgerald, with its breakfast share showing a decrease from 5.6 per cent to 3.4 per cent
They’re getting down with The Rock in Dunedin which now holds the title of most listeners each week with 19,700 different people tuning in and a 16.8% share of the market. Breakfast results show Radio Dunedin taking the highest share with 15.1% of the commercial radio breakfast market in Dunedin.

What is national radio’s share?
They dont go on the survey because they independant
Sorry Jack – that’s not the reason. RNZ National and Concert aren’t in the survey because they’re non-commercial, public radio.
In fact any radio station (incl. community access and Iwi radio) can buy into the survey except RNZ).
It’s widely acknowledged that the big commercial companies wanted to exclude RNZ National mainly because it creams even their best brands everytime. The most listened to station in NZ is in fact RNZ National – by some margin – and that didn’t look good for the commercials trying to convince advertisers to use radio.
