Readers see red over NZ Herald web ad
It appears that NZHerald.co.nz has followed TVNZ’s move to offer exclusive page wide advertising to clients.
Readers have contacted Dan News to voice their disgust at the website’s appearance this morning.
“That colour makes viewing the page a painful experience” says Wayne, a reader from Dunedin.
What do you think of it?

I like it! Well, I would say that wouldn’t I?
Actually, as an editor I used to hate advertising that gets in the way of the editorial content. At least this way it doesn’t stop you reading the content – nothing flying around the screen (remember mouse pointer ads? shudder) or sliding in front of the story you’re trying to read.

I would say that it does make the page harder to head. And is pretty off putting.
Paul has a point there, Dan. Why bombard your users with ads hovering across your content when they won’t be interested in clicking them anyway? Just flood the background with a bright red that will make their eyes feel like they are hemorrhaging.
Oh well. Their effort is kinda cute, I guess.
It’s been changed back now.
Not for me it hasn’t. It’s just the front page remember
I just wish Vodafone’s 3G coverage was as wide as those red pixels – I was in Tutakaka for easter and there was nothing anywhere out there (Twitter withdrawls!!!). Less online ad spend & more upgrading of cell sites would be appreciated thank you!
I agree with Matt there. I live in St Albans (very close to CHCH city, and at my house the 3G coverage is very weak in my lounge and a far corner of my bedroom, and everywhere else is not 3G. Can Vodafone please work on fixing 3G before blinding us?
In the words of Split Enz…. “I see red, I see red, I see red!!”
Hi there, if you guys click through the ad it takes you to our Making 3G easy page which has coverage maps. Detailed coverage maps. The good news is that by the end of May we’ll have 3G coverage extended out to 97% of where New Zealanders live work and play. The easy way to tell is if you have 2G coverage today, you’ll have 3G by the end of May.
Depending on what phone/vodem you have, you may need a new device to take advantage of the extended network reach. The new gear runs on a different frequency (900MHz) to the existing 3G network (2100MHz) and not all the phones work on both.
Cheers

In my opinion, it looks like a dodgy Bebo skin.
I can see why Vodafone would do this, but I went on the Herald once this morning and didn’t check back for the rest of the day, usually I check every hour or so.
